The destruction of Puerto Rico's electric grid by recent hurricanes presents us with an opportunity to innovate as the island rebuilds. Rather than rebuilding a centralized power grid we could create a series of micro-grids that could integrated renewably and conventionally produced electricity. Micro-grids could increase the resilience of the island's energy system and serve as a laboratory that would allow us to learn how well this innovative system will work.
To read more about ideas like this start here.

Can micro-grids be part of a quick fix? Yes! Arizona State University has created portable, solar-powered micro-grid systems that are containerized and ready to go. Read more about this timely project of their LEAPS program.
